    Sword  of  the  Spirit

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.   Ephesians 6:17

Machaira, (3162) makh'-ahee-rah; prob. fem. of a presumed der. of G3163; a knife, i e dirk; fig. war, judicial punisment: - sword.

Rhema, (4487) hray'-mah; from G4483; an utterance (individ., collect. or spec.); by impl. a matter or topic (espec. of narration, command or dispute); with a neg. naught whatever: - + evil, + nothing, saying, word.

'Macharia': a very brutal weapon, 19 inches long and razar sharp, two-edged, with the tip curved upward . . . extremely sharp and deadly . . . used mainly in a 'stabbing' like motion.

By using the 'Machaira' to describe the 'Word', Paul is declaring that God has given the 'Church' a very brutal and deadly weapon.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.    Hebrews 4:12

Logos, (3056) log'-os; from G3004; something said (including the thought); by impl. a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extens. a computation; spec. (with the art. in John) the Divine Expression (i. e. Christ): - account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say (-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work. - Jesus, the Eternal Expression of God.

    Distomos, (1366) dis'-tom-os; from G1364 and G4750; double-edged: - with two edges, two-edged.

Machaira, (3162) makh'-ahee-rah; prob. fem. of a presumed der. of G3163; a knife, i e dirk; fig. war, judicial punisment: - sword.

Again, Paul compares the 'Word' of God to a two-edged sword and names the particular sword he is describing, the 'Machaira'.

    Jesus and the Two-edged Sword

And he had in His right hand seven stars: and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and His countenance was as the sun shineth in His strength.    Revelation 1:16

In Revelations we see Jesus with a sharp two-edged sword coming out of His mouth.   In other words, Jesus is speaking the Word of God.

Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of Man, then shall ye know that I am He, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.    John 8:28

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.   And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.    John 12:49-50

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.   And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward an hungered.   And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.   But He answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh him up into the Holy city, and setteth Him on a pinnacle of the temple,  And saith unto Him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give His angels charge concerning thee: and in (their) hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.   Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;  And saith unto Him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.   Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.   Then the devil leaveth Him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him.     Matthew 4:1-11

When Satan came against Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus responded by speaking the Word of God -- "IT IS WRITTEN".   Jesus used the two-edged sword on Satan.   The Word spoken by the Father, one edge, repeated by Jesus, second edge, became a sharp two-edged sword.   Jesus defeated Satan and his temptations with the Word of God.

The Believer and the Two-edged Sword

I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.   I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.    I John 2:14

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.    Revelation 12:11

Word: Logos, (3056) log'-os; from G3004; something said (including the thought); by impl. a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extens. a computation; spec.

Testimony: Marturia, (3141) mar-too-ree'-ah; from G3144; evidence given (judicially or gen.): - record, report, testimony, witness.

We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;    II Corinthians 4:13

God has given us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!   We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus!   We are Overcomers!

When Satan comes against us, we respond by speaking the Word of God.   The Word spoken by the Father, one edge, repeated by US, second edge, becomes OUR sharp two-edged sword against the enemy.   We defeat Satan and his temptations with the Word of God.

When we pray, we don't pray the problem, we pray the SOLUTION.   We pray God's Word.   It doesn't matter whether we are fighting temptation, praying for healing, doing spiritual warfare, taking back our cities, or casting out demons.   We SPEAK the Word of God into the situation.
